Ann is a courageous mother from Kenya who suffered years of violence at the hands of her husband. Her life changed forever when her husband came home from prison and attempted to kill her. Somehow, Ann survived but the authorities failed to protect her, leaving her to rebuild her life alone.
With the support of ActionAid, Ann has received counselling, medical care, and a grant to start her own business. Though life is still difficult, she now has hope for a safer and brighter future.

Too many women in Kenya live under the constant threat of gender-based violence and femicide, often with little protection or justice. In 2024 alone, a woman was murdered every second day. For women like Ann, simply surviving takes extraordinary courage. And without income, safety, or support, rebuilding life after violence can seem impossible.
ActionAid works closely with women- led local groups such as Sauti ya Wanawake (Women’s Voices) to support women in crisis. Last year, together we helped over 5,000 women in Kenya access safe spaces, counselling, medical care and legal aid. More than 1,200 women were able to take their first steps towards independence through leadership training, financial literacy, and livelihood opportunities such as farming, tailoring and small businesses.
