What happened?

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on 28 March 2025 at 06:20 UTC. Its epicentre was located just 17 km from Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, home to approximately 1.5 million people.

The tremor caused widespread devastation, with multiple buildings collapsing, roads blocked by debris, and critical infrastructure severely damaged.

Over 1,002 deaths and 2,306 injuries have been reported so far.

Those residing within 20 km of the epicentre—approximately 560,000 people—face the highest risk of displacement, injury, and loss of life.
A major aftershock, measuring 6.4 in magnitude, struck at 06:32 UTC, compounding the destruction and further endangering those in the affected regions.
