Add your voice to the campaign to pass the Occupied Territories Bill
As we watch the horrors in the Occupied Palestinian Territory unfold, we wonder when will world leaders take stronger action.
40,435 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed and 93,534 reported injured, with many still missing under the rubble. With nowhere to flee, Palestinians face relentless and widespread attacks across the enclave. Without a permanent ceasefire, the Israeli hostages and their families suffer unbearable trauma. Meanwhile Israel is increasing its military activity in the West Bank, where the situation is rapidly deteriorating. This all comes in the context of a decades long illegal occupation that has compounded poverty for Palestinians.
Since 2018, Irish Senators and TDs have been calling for a ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements. Last week, Taoiseach Simon Harris requested updated advice from Ireland’s Attorney General regarding trade with Israel, in light of a recent historic ruling from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) the occupation of Palestine is illegal. This follows an earlier ICJ ruling that Israel was plausibly carrying out genocide in Gaza.
That’s why on Wednesday 4th of September, alongside other civil society organisations, trade unions, academics, and political figures, we added our voice to the campaign calling on the Government to pass the Occupied Territories Bill and urging all political parties to commit to supporting it ahead of the upcoming general election.
Two leading EU law experts—Professor Takis Tridimas and Professor Panos Koutrakos have confirmed that Ireland is fully entitled to pass the Occupied Territories Bill and ban trade with illegal Israeli settlements.
