ActionAid Ireland welcomes the decision by the Government today to approve Ireland to intervene in a case against Israel under the Genocide Convention currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The case was initiated following Israel’s response to the October 7th 2023 attack by Hamas and the blatant violations of International Humanitarian Law, war crimes and crimes against humanity by Israel.

Karol Balfe, ActionAid Ireland CEO, said: “After over 14 months of horrific violence and unimaginable suffering in Gaza which has cost the lives of around 45,000 people, maimed more than 100,000, seen thousands of children orphaned and almost two million people displaced, it is very welcome that Ireland is taking this move and committing to international justice and humanity.”

“The blatant violations of international humanitarian law by Israeli forces are unacceptable and demand an immediate response. The international community must act decisively imposing sanctions  on military and political leaders that are responsible and ensuring a full arms embargo and the opening of humanitarian aid channels in order to protect the lives of Palestinians and ensure accountability from Israel”.

She concluded: “Every day without action deepens complicity in the deprivation and suffering of innocent civilians.  A ceasefire isn’t just urgent – it’s a moral imperative.”
