ActionAid Ireland alarmed by report warning the Gaza Strip is on the brink of famine
ActionAid Ireland has said it is deeply alarmed by the findings of the latest IPC report which warns that the Gaza Strip is on the brink of famine.
The report says that over 1.84 million people are experiencing acute food insecurity, with nearly 133,000 already facing catastrophic conditions.
It also found that:
- Acute Malnutrition is ten times higher than before the escalation of the hostilities, increasing the risk of famine.
- Nearly the entire population has been displaced multiple times, risking injuries or death from shelling and aerial bombardments
- The latest evacuation orders have significantly disrupted humanitarian operations
- The population classified in the “Catastrophe” phase is expected to double in the coming months
- An estimated 60,000 cases of acute malnutrition among children aged 6 to 59 months are expected to occur in the Gaza Strip between September 2024 and August 2025. In addition 16,500 cases of pregnant and breastfeeding women will need treatment.
ActionAid Ireland CEO Karol Balfe said: “We demand an end to this impunity and call for full accountability. The international community must use all available diplomatic and legal mechanisms to protect Palestinians and safeguard their rights. All states must respect the decisions of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and support its proceedings to hold those responsible accountable. UN Member States must also act decisively to uphold the UNGA Resolution on the ICJ Advisory Opinion on Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine before more lives and futures are irreparably destroyed.”
She added: “Only an immediate and permanent ceasefire can halt this and allow for the delivery of lifesaving aid. We urgently call on governments to suspend arms sales to Israel and take immediate action, including sanctions, to end the violence. The world must act now to protect civilian lives and uphold the rule of law.”
