Join us on the National Climate Demonstration

Will you join us on the streets on 14 November to reclaim our future?

Climate change has hit home. The hottest summer on record. Hot on the heels of the wettest winter, which brought destructive storms and flooding to communities all over Ireland. Wildfires across Europe. Climate devastation is now on our doorstep, but this devastation has been destroying the lives of communities in the Global South for a long time.

And it is those communities who have done the least to cause the climate crisis who are paying the heaviest price. The recent apocalyptic floods in Nepal, hit communities with some of the lowest emissions in the world. And our warming planet is becoming less safe for all our children.

Climate change and women’s rights

As well as causing new devastation to the lives of millions of people, climate change and the instability it causes threatens women’s rights by worsening existing inequalities and violence.

  • There is a 28% increase in femicide during heatwaves – by the end of the century climate change could be linked to one in every ten cases of intimate partner violence
  • 47.8 million more women than men already experience food insecurity and hunger globally.
  • By 2050, climate change could push up to 158 million additional women and girls into poverty (16 million more women and girls than men and boys.)

Our demands

A fossil free future – We need clean air, clean water, and healthy soils and to stop polluting industries taking more than the earth can give. Ireland needs to step up the phase-out of fossil fuels, and abandon proposals that are incompatible with this commitment. This means a ban on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and no new fossil fuel infrastructure.  Ireland must also stop facilitating fossil fuel expansion globally through our role as a global financial hub.

Energy for people, not for data centres – Data centres are responsible for increasing our energy bills and for keeping Ireland hooked on fossil fuels. We need real energy justice with a renewable energy system that is protected against the volatility of geopolitical price shocks. Ireland must impose a moratorium on new data centres until our climate commitments are met.

A fair and just transition for everyone – as we rebuild our energy, transport, housing, and food systems, we need to make sure that no one is left behind, and that women and disadvantaged communities are finally placed at the heart of change. Climate action can’t be just for those who can afford it.

Climate finance that delivers justice – Countries in the Global South have contributed the least to climate change but are facing its worst impacts. Ireland must pay its fair share of climate finance to support countries and communities on the frontlines of the crisis. This means increasing public, grants-based climate finance, not pushing already debt-burdened countries further into debt through loans, and ensuring funding reaches the communities who need it most, particularly women and marginalised groups.

Climate leadership not climate hypocrisy – our climate law is the best legal protection we have to guarantee climate justice. Our climate law must be protected, not undermined. Ireland must demonstrate leadership as it negotiates on behalf of the EU during its presidency at COP31 in Turkey and in its role as co-host of the Conference to Transition Away from Fossil Fuels process.

This demonstration is organised by Stop Climate Chaos – a coalition of over 40 organisations, of which ActionAid Ireland is a proud member.
