A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake has struck western Colombia, killing at least 160 people and leaving homes and essential services destroyed. Search and rescue operations are underway right now, with the number of people killed and injured expected to rise over the coming days. Â
Families whose homes are destroyed urgently need protection from further harm – basic essentials like a safe space to shelter, clean water, food and medical support are desperately needed for those who have lost everything.Â
We urgently need your help to ensure we can be there for women, children and families who have been hardest hit and ensure that our local staff can scale up response.

Our team in Colombia is working right now with communities, women’s rights organisations and other local partners to understand the most urgent needs of those who have lived through the chaos and fear of this devastating earthquake. Â
ActionAid, together with our partners on the ground, are assessing the situation and preparing a response which is led by the community themselves. Our teams are working to get them the essentials they need, including:
- Cash assistance so families can meet their most urgent needs with dignityÂ
- Food and essential supplies for people who lived through the earthquakeÂ
- Health support as medical services come under enormous pressureÂ
- Hygiene supplies, including items specifically needed by women and girlsÂ
