Begin your sponsorship journey!

In Marafa, Kenya, 70% of the area has low access to water and many women and children have to walk over 10km to fetch water.

What happens when you sponsor a child?

As soon as you sign up, you’ll receive:

  • A welcome pack with a photo of the child you’re sponsoring and their story so far.
  • Two messages a year from your child – they might be letters, drawings, or postcards!
  • Photos and updates as they grow up, so that each step of the way, you can see the incredible difference you’re making in their community.

Your sponsorship can help the whole community to become self-sufficient providing a viable route out of poverty and ensuring children get the essentials they need to grow up healthy and happy.

Sponsor a child today and start a special friendship with a girl or a boy from one of the poorest countries of the world (most likely from a rural community in Vietnam, Nepal, Cambodia, Kenya or Uganda) —a friendship you’ll treasure forever.

Child sponsorship during coronavirus

Our child sponsorship programme is even more vital now during the Covid-19 pandemic. The lockdowns globally have led to an increase in child marriage and school dropouts, as well as an urgent need for clean water, food and better sanitation in some areas.

72% of the donations* we receive directly fund vital long-term work in the sponsored child’s community (whilst 28% is kept in Ireland for campaigning for structural changes to end poverty, raising awareness and encouraging others to become child sponsors)

*We may use part of your donations to respond to the devastating impact of coronavirus in the country where you sponsor a child. We urgently need more sponsors to help us reach more children.

ActionAid in Kenya

Kenya’s economy is based mainly on agriculture, the most common crops being maize, beans, potatoes, sorghum and millet, while coffee, tea and sisal are grown as cash crops.  Most produce is grown by smallholders, with much of the work being done by women. However, food production is restricted by poor availability of improved farming implements and the lack of relevant skills.

The main problems faced by families in Marafa are food insecurity, access to water, environmental degradation, and a lack of basic health and education services.

Your sponsorship helps resolve these issues and bring lasting improvements to the lives of children and families in Kenya.
