Haiti Emergency Appeal
On Saturday 14th August, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti. Over 1,000 people have been confirmed dead, and even more are seriously injured. As volunteers and emergency services continuing to search for survivors, it’s expected that in the coming days and weeks, these numbers will continue to rise – it’s an unimaginable tragedy; the extent of which we are only just beginning to uncover.
This earthquake was higher in magnitude than the 2010 earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands of people, and aftershocks continue to be felt. The worst-affected areas are in the southern regions of the country – Jérémie and Les Cayes. There is significant damage to homes, roads and infrastructure. Women and girls were already bearing the brunt of the multiple crises facing Haiti, including Covid-19, rising hunger, political instability and gang violence. The fallout from this earthquake, could push many more families into poverty and hunger.
We urgently need your help in supporting the women and families who have lost so much in Haiti.
€30 could provide blankets and pillows to families who have lost everything.
€50 could provide vulnerable families with emergency food.
€100 could provide psychosocial support for traumatised children and their families.
ActionAid has been working in Haiti since 1996, working with communities and local partners to run emergency and long-term programmes, making our organisation and local staff uniquely placed to respond to where the need is greatest
Our emergency teams are on the ground right now assisting with rescue efforts in Jérémie as families try to pull loved ones from the rubble. We are assessing urgent needs and preparing to respond to vulnerable households with the following:
- Immediate shelter and emergency food
- Blankets, pillows, hygiene and dignity kits
- Women’s protection activities and services
- Counselling support for traumatised children and their families.
How your donation will be used
90% of your donation will go directly to our Haiti Earthquake Appeal.
10% of your donation will be retained for ActionAid’s Emergency Action Fund which will only be used for ensuring we are prepared and able to respond quickly and more effectively to future emergencies and crises.
If the total amount raised for this appeal exceeds the funds needed for the response, ActionAid will transfer the remaining balance to the Emergency Action Fund.
