A devasting and lethal second wave of Covid-19 is currently hitting India, putting millions of lives at risk. As of May 2021, Covid-19 cases in India alone have topped 20 million, with over 220,000 deaths.
The situation is at breaking point as frontline workers work in overwhelmed hospitals deal with oxygen shortages and insufficient numbers of hospital beds. Some of the most vulnerable in society, including women domestic workers caring for people with the virus, are being left without access to protective equipment and exposed to infection.
Across India there are frantic calls for help for beds, medicines, oxygen, essential drugs and tests.
How we are responding
ActionAid is responding to the Covid-19 pandemic in 40 countries across Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and the Middle East including India, Nepal, Brazil and Cambodia where Covid-19 cases continue to rise.
We have reached over 20 million people with our life-saving support: delivering food packages, distributing essentials like hygiene kits, funding women’s shelters and combating the spread of misinformation with awareness-raising projects like local radio broadcasts.
In India alone, we have reached over 6.8 million people with food support, sanitation, and protection against gender-based violence.
But we urgently need your help today as India’s second wave puts millions of lives at risk.
Please donate now.
